Sydney Carline

[1888-1929]

Medallist and painter of
landscapes and portraits, etcher

Carline studied at the Slade School and in Paris, and was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Society of Arts in 1916. He served as an officer pilot in the RFC from 1915-20, being wounded in France in 1916, but was appointed an official war artist in 1918 and sent to Italy, where he made aerial paintings for the Imperial War Museum. He subsequently travelled in Palestine, Syria, Mesopotamia, Persia and India, and joined the London Group in 1922. Lawrence included his oil painting of an aerial scene, Bombing in Wadi Fara, in the group of illustrations which followed the text.
