The glory of a young man
p 564, wood-cut, Kennington, 134 x 124 mm
Drawing in white relief on solid black background. Three male figures in shorts - the one on the left is leaning on the handle of an implement, the centre figure stands with his arms at his sides, a water container in his left hand, and the third man, on the right, drinks from a container, head thrown back. There is a fire in the foreground and the whole drawing is marvellously lit by its flames.
p 530 [tr ed pp 543/4] - 'I stayed at Rumm for their first day, dumb at the unreality of these healthy-looking fellows, like stiff-bodied school boys in their shirt-sleeves and shorts, as they wandered, anonymous and irresponsible, about the cliffs which had been my private resort.'
