William Roberts
[1895-1980]
Painter
Roberts studied at the Slade School and at the Omega Workshops under Roger Fry, and became a member of the Vorticist and London Groups. He was an official artist in both World Wars, and his work was regularly shown in London, including one-man exhibitions at the Redfern and Leicester Galleries. Roberts was the second largest contributor of illustrations to SP, after Kennington, with a total of 35 works. Twenty-seven line drawings, executed in a highly individual austere and simplistic style, were printed in the text, and one, Night Bombing, was included in the group following the text. Roberts also did seven other studies - Camel march in pen and wash, a portrait in oils of Lloyd, and pencil and chalk portraits of Newcombe, Buxton, McMahon, Winterton and Wingate.
