John Singer Sargent
[1856-1925]
Painter and watercolourist
Born in Florence, Sargent was the son of an American surgeon, and he travelled extensively in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and America after studying in Rome and Florence, and under Carolus Duran in Paris. Eventually he settled in England, becoming a frequent exhibitor at the Salon. His chief reputation was as a portraitist - his works included Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth, and Joseph Chamberlain, and he drew Storrs in charcoal for Lawrence.
